Take note of Smoke-Free Melaka Zones.
Non-smoking areas.
On 14 June 2011, the Ministry of Health gazette five zones in the state of Melaka as non-smoking zones which covers:
Melaka Raya.
World Heritage City.
Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC)
Alor Gajah Town Centre.
Jasin Town Centre.
The smoke-free Melaka Program aims to protect the general public from the hazards of second-hand cigarette smoke that is detrimental to health. It also hopes to empower non-smokers to voice out against smokers who smoke within the zones.
Within the Building
At workplaces.
At all museums and antiquites.
In all hotels.
In all business premises.
In all eateries (restaurants/food courts/hawker centers)
Smoke-free areas encompasses all areas under the roof of the particular building, including under umbrellas or canopies of food centers.
Outside the Building
Within the zones, smoking is also prohibited outside at:
Along exclusive zones of Jonker Walk and Jalan Kota.
Historical and Cultural Heritage sites.
Playground and recreational areas.
Penalty for smoking in smoke-free Melaka zones:
If one is caught smoking within the smoke-free zones, a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or a jail term not exceeding two years is applicable under the Tobacco Control Regulations 2004.
The responsibilities of premise owners or occupants:
Not to provide ash-trays within the premises.
Display ‘No Smoking’ signs clearly within the premises. Failure to comply will result in fines of not exceeding RM3,000 or a jail-time not more than six months.
Ensure no one smokes within the premises. Failure to comply will result in fines not exceeding RM5,000 or a jail-time not more than one year.
