Tetapi kini ia turut menjadi hidangan pilihan di hotel terkemuka di Malaysia.   Ia merupakan sejenis   kuih   yang diperbuat daripada tepung beras, yang berintikan   nisan   atau   gula Melaka . Putu berasal dari   Kerala & Tamilnadu ,   India . Putu adalah daripada   bahasa Tamil   yang bermaksud makanan daripada beras.   Ia dinamakan sempena bentuknya seperti piring, dan akan dibalut dengan kain putih sebelum dikukus dalam kukusan khas. Selepas itu, ia akan diletakkan di atas kepingan kecil daun pisang yang dialas dengan inti kelapa parut. Terdapat juga putu piring yang dicampurkan kunyit menjadikan warna kuning. Selain daripada putu piring, terdapat juga  putu mayam  dan  putu buluh  atau  putu bambu .
