Zong Zi is eaten by the Chinese
5th day of the 5th lunar month of the Chinese calendar is a day zong zi is eaten by the Chinese. It is also called the Dragon Boat Festival. The is a myth about zong zi. Check this myth with wikipedia.
In Melaka, zong zi is made using the nyonya recipe. Different types of zong zi is as follows;
- Hokkien zong zi - the rice is seasoned in soy sauce and five spices is used as seasoning.
- Nyonya zong zi - butterfly pea flower, candied winter melon and pandan leaves is used.
- Hainanese zong zi - mushrooms and chunkier ingredients form the fillings.
- Cantonese zong zi - salted egg yolk, mung beans is used and the rice is seasoned in salt and garlic water.
- Teochew zong zi - chestnut, pork belly and ball of red bean or lotus paste is used.
- Hakka zong zi - pork belly, preserved vegetables, mushrooms is used.
