Treaty of London 1824 to Melaka

The Dutch transferred to Great Britain the ' Town and Fort of Malacca and its Dependencies'  in which Britain and the Netherlands demarcated their territorial spheres of interest, by the Treaty of London 1824.

Individual had access to government officials when the headmen, or penghulu , preserved peace and kept population records as British law was introduced in 1826. The tengchu  of the Cheng Hoon Teng temple whose appointment was confirmed by the British authorities became leaders to the Chinese community.

Melaka made full use of the visit of the Chinese Embassy in 1403 to strengthen her position in Southeast Asia.

William Farquhar was in Melaka from 1803 to 1818 after he arrived with the invasion force, married a local girl and was known as the 'Rajah of Melaka'.

Malaccans believed that the fort would not crumble but in 1807 it was blown up with gunpowder leaving the remains of a single gate and a small stretch of wall. Porta de Santiago, is a heritage site today together with what William Farquhar supported and made no move to destroy the Church, and the Stadhuys at the Dutch Square.
